Punk Me Tender: Made in Paris with an Angeleno Aesthetic

Punk Me Tender, born Romain LeFebvre, emanates color, at once vibrant and perfectly saturated. A warm, creative spirit, Punk moves with grace and lives to innovate and inspire, and his rich, ever-changing body of work is indicative of this mantra.

Born and raised in Paris, France, Punk embraced the City of Lights’ notoriously monochrome palette before immigrating to Los Angeles in the early 2000s in search of a more vivid scene. A connection to Thierry Guetta, also known as Mr. Brainwash, lured him into the world of street art, and after years of developing his personal style, he established his Punk Me Tender moniker, combining axioms from two of his major influences: Daft Punk and Elvis Presley.

Coming of Age in His Artistry

In early phases of his career, Punk drew inspiration from the rich palettes and experimental spirits of Alexander McQueen, Jean Paul Gaultier, Philippe Starck, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons and Salvador Dali, forming his own signature subgenre of abstract expressionism.

His world-renowned butterfly motif, protruding perfectly from its surrounding canvas, wood panel or entire building wall, represents freedom, spirit, beauty and embracing change to evolve, in which the masses and his collectors have found solace and resonated greatly.

Punk executes these three-dimensional works through a bold melange of mediums: spun acrylic, spray paint, sparkling Swarovski crystals, diamond dust and, in choice moments, his original photography. Noteworthy figures, including Khloé Kardashian, Paris Hilton, Mariah Carey, and Dave Navarro, have brought his work into their personal collections, and Kylie Jenner commissioned a large lilac butterfly piece for her recent Kylie Cosmetics x Stormi launch.

Evolution of Self and Style: Commemorating His 2023 World Tour

In an ode to one of his two initial influences, Elvis Presley, Punk released the “Love Me Tender” series, focused on the entirety of nature’s garden and debuted with Art Angels in Los Angeles on March 16, 2023, complete with an activation of lush grass and cherry blossoms spread throughout the gallery.

This body of work served as a subtle and elegant complement to his prior releases. There remained strong cohesion between both series as his butterflies remained nestled beneath the surface of the bouquets.

Punk brought his classic and new works around the world throughout the following months, venturing from the Hamptons to Saint-Tropez to Mykonos and reinventing each new exhibition with a unique, live installation. Painting white dresses adorned on guests as well as blank, butterfly-clad canvases demonstrated his whimsical, risk-welcoming nature.

Moving Through Space and Time with Light and Color

His latest series, sheathing the butterfly and a border of colored LED light à la James Turrell in elegant, white fabric, embodies his spirit of experimentation and unrelenting desire to push boundaries even after decades of creation.
