DAVID UESSEM ART – HYPERREALISM, SURREAL MASKING & SCULPTURAL ILLUSION
David Uessem acquired his precision and eye for the perfect subject when he studied illustration at the IBKK in Bochum, Germany. Living and working near Cologne in a converter church studio, Uessem creates works which challenge perception, he invites us as viewers, we experience an enjoyable perceptual game between visibility and concealment, between obviousness and masking – and maybe not least a battle between art and reality.
His practice revolves around growth through art, both personal and collection. Each painting becomes a visual dialogue, guiding the viewer through a layered experience of revelation and concealment.
HYPERREALISM MEETS SURREAL COMPOSITION
Uessem’s large-scale paintings are identifiably unique. Over the years, he has developed a distinctive style that merges meticulous hyperrealist techniques with unexpected, dreamlike arrangements.
His works again and again present us with his central motifs: the fusion of a human figure with a mask.
David Uessem stands out with his high expectations of technical excellence. Having developed his oil and acrylic glaze techniques himself, he can create exact colour properties and thus work with precision on the genesis of his paintings for weeks. The natural flesh tones meet artificial materials, like shimmering gold, reflective foil, sparkling jewels, bouquets, or pop-cultural symbols such as Mickey Mouse. These elements disrupt reality while appearing most photographically precise.
The more realistic the painting style, the stranger the encounter between body and object. This tension forms the core motifs of David Uessem’s art.
ICONIC SERIES: MASKING, IDENTITY, AND STAGED REALITY
Uessem expats his painting motifs into three-dimensional form, translating illusion into physical structure. These works expand beyond the canvas and into the viewer’s space reinforcing his exploration of surface, material and perception.
This juxtaposition leaves the view conflicted with their expectations and the reality of the works, as he consciously tests the limits of medium and material.
TECHNIQUE AND PROCESS
David Uessem’s hyperrealist precision is achieved through meticulously developed oil and acrylic glaze techniques. Working with color-primed canvases and details underdrawings, he builds layered surfaces over weeks to achieve exact tonal control and luminous depth.
His practice bridges classical craftsmanship and contemporary subject matter; placing him in dialogue with both historical masters and modern figurative painting.
