As an artist who paints in the style of the New York School, I have created a new series called The Modernist. This collection represents my love for midcentury modern design, as well as my admiration for the abstract expressionist painters who have come before me, such as Cy Twombly, Willem Dekooning and Joan Mitchell. The Modernist series is a fusion of color field and gesture and action painting, resulting in large-scale, unique paintings that are intended to evoke emotion and trigger thought.

One of the key features of this series is the use of white paint as a tool to subtract and create space in the composition. This technique is inspired by Japanese culture and design, and is reminiscent of the way bonsai trees are shaped by subtracting leaves to achieve a desired shape. By simplifying the composition, my paintings become more elegant and timeless, fitting perfectly into the midcentury modern era that I love.

I strive to capture energy and emotion in my paintings, with each brush stroke reflecting a specific emotion or feeling. The colors play off one another and are meant to balance each other out, while the use of bold, powerful strokes juxtaposed with calm, delicate ones create a sense of tension and harmony in the painting. By taking inspiration from my predecessors and reconfiguring their focal points on a larger scale, I have created a series that is truly my own.

At the core of my work is the belief that beauty can be found through the art of subtraction. By removing excess and letting the core ideas flow, my paintings thrive in abundance. The Modernist series is a representation of my fundamentalism as an artist, creating what I feel and evoking a feeling in the viewer. I hope that my paintings will continue to evolve and be interpreted differently by each person who views them, making them timeless pieces of living art.
