Audrey Hepburn in her little black dress. Marilyn Monroe mid-pose. David Bowie with the Aladdin Sane lightning bolt across his face. Each one instantly recognisable, and each one blowing a perfect pink bubble of gum.

That single bubble is the signature of Michael Moebiu, It has made him one of the most recognisable names in contemporary pop art. So why bubblegum, and what does it add to the most famous faces of the last century?

Michael Moebius is a German contemporary painter, born in 1968 in Pirna, in what was then East Germany. He is best known for his bubblegum portraits: celebrity icons reimagined with one playful, brightly coloured bubble. His work has appeared on the covers of Playboy, GQ and Vogue, and he now lives and works in the United States.

At first glance, the bubble is simply fun. Look longer and it starts to do something cleverer.

It breaks the pose. The icons Moebius paints are usually seen in their most polished, controlled moments. A bubble of gum is the opposite: casual, a little cheeky, the kind of thing you’d get told off for in class. Adding one turns an untouchable legend into someone who feels human and in on the joke.

It freezes a moment. A bubble exists for a second or two before it pops. Placing one on a timeless face creates a tension between permanence and the fleeting instant. It’s a fitting image for fame itself.

It’s pure pop culture. Bubblegum is one of the most recognisably Western, all-American treats there is. For an artist who grew up in communist East Germany, where Western brands and cartoons were hard to come by, that isn’t a random choice. Moebius has spoken about treasuring these once-forbidden items as a child, and how their colours, designs and even their smell shaped him.

It adds a pop of colour. Visually, the bubble is often the brightest point in the composition. It pulls the eye straight to the face and gives each series its instantly recognisable look, with the colour shifting from piece to piece, as in the signature blue of Audrey Tiffany Blue 2.

Michael Moebius

Moebius’s story explains a lot about his work. As a child in East Germany he drew cartoons, sketching characters like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and the Terminator, icons that were considered controversial there at the time.

Art wasn’t the obvious path, though. He first followed a more practical career in engineering and architectural illustration. Everything changed in the mid-1990s, when he came across a book of pin-ups by Alberto Vargas and decided figurative painting was what he wanted to do.
He went on to study at the Academy of Arts in Dresden, immersing himself in the techniques of Andy Warhol and the Renaissance master Titian. That mix of old-master skill and pop-art attitude is exactly what you see in his portraits today: carefully painted faces, delivered with a wink.

Part of the appeal is spotting who’s behind the bubble. Some of the most recognisable pieces in the series include:

  • Audrey Bubblegum and Audrey Tiffany Blue 2 – Audrey Hepburn, the ultimate symbol of elegance, caught in a playful moment.
  • Sugar – Marilyn Monroe, reimagined in a turtleneck rather than her famous glamour.
  • Aladdin Sane (David Bowie) – Bowie’s lightning-bolt album cover, given a bubblegum twist.
  • Blondie Bubblegum – Clint Eastwood’s iconic Western gunslinger, suddenly far less intimidating.
  • Queen Bubblegum – Queen Elizabeth II, perhaps the most unexpected bubble-blower of all.
  • All You Need is Gum – a nod to The Beatles.
  • iBubble – Steve Jobs, the tech visionary, in bubblegum form.

Most works are released as hand-signed, numbered limited-edition giclées on canvas, typically in editions of 250 at around 30 x 40 inches, with smaller editions of 25 in larger sizes.
