Amy Shekhter’s story is well known, starting her life in Alaska, surrounded by dramatic landscapes and months of near-total darkness, and it made her an artist obsessed with light. Coming to Florida in 2002, with a Master’s in Art education, Amy spent eight years teaching art in public and private schools before calling herself a full-time artist. Date Night, her newest unique work, feels like the clearest expression yet of where that path has led.

Shekhter didn’t arrive in Florida and start making the richly textured, dreamlike work she’s known for today. She spent nearly a decade in classrooms, teaching students the fundamentals of art before she found her way back to her own. When she finally did, her early work looked nothing like Date Night, it was pop portraiture, bold reinterpretations of cultural icons like Frida Kahlo, Elvis, and Princess Grace, rendered in resin and glitter under series titles like Rock Your World. It was playful, graphic, unmistakably pop art.

What she makes now is a different language entirely.

At some time over the last several years, Shekhter’s work shifted from portraits of influential figures to something more interior – dreamlike women born from memory and imagination rather than headlines. Her current works draw on fashion, nature, and global culture; whilst the figures themselves are drawn from imagination and creativity. Where her early work commented on fame and materialism, her current work is quieter and more personal, built around themes of femininity, transformation, and growth.

The materials evolved alongside the message. Shekhter now builds her pieces in layers: paint, hand-cast resin, plexiglass, beads, sequins – applied with a sculptor’s patience rather than a painter’s brush alone. The result is genuinely three-dimensional: figures and florals rise off the canvas, catching light differently depending on where you stand. It’s tactile in a way most wall art isn’t, which is very much the point. This isn’t work made to be glanced at. It’s made to be walked toward.

At 70 by 50 inches, Date Night is one of Shekhter’s larger, unique works; a one-of-one piece, signed by the artist, built from the same layered vocabulary of paint, resin, beads, and sequins that defines her current practice. It sits within a small cluster of recent titles: Night Owl; Night Bloom; After Midnight; Dead of Night, that all lean into evening, intimacy, and afterglow. Read together, they read less like a coincidence and more like a mood Shekhter has been circling: warmth found after dark, connection as its own kind of light.

An artist who spent twenty years watching Alaskan winters swallow the daylight, who spent the following two decades building color and dimension into everything she made, it tracks that when she finally turns her attention to romance, the result isn’t soft or muted. Date Night is dense with texture, dimensional, catching light from every angle. It’s warmth built the hard way, layer by layer, by someone who knows exactly what its absence looks like.

Date Night

Photographs flatten what Date Night actually is. The hand-cast resin and beadwork are built to shift as the light in a room shifts and as you move past it, something no screen fully captures.

For collectors drawn to work with real physical presence, and for anyone interested in acquiring a unique, signed piece from an artist whose practice keeps deepening, Date Night is a strong entry point into Shekhter’s current body of work.
